LOOK: Volcano explosion creates new Pacific island

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has released the first photos of the newest island in the Pacific that was created by an undersea volcano explosion in December 2014.
The volcano in the Polynesian island kingdom of Tonga and experts found the new island a month later, when the eruption had ceased and the ash cloud had cleared.
NASA said the images were acquired through its Landsat 8 satellite.
The photo showing the new island was taken April 28, 2015, four months after the eruption.
The Tongan Ministry of Information and Communications said the new island is about 120 meters (390 feet) above sea level. It measures 1.5 kilometers from north to south, and 2 kilometers from west to east.
