WATCH: A profile of the artist’s life and work, made shortly after his death in 2008

In 1967, Fred Yates abandoned an unhappy teaching career and moved to Cornwall to be an artist. The next 40 years were devoted to his work and, very slowly, he built up a significant and widespread following among collectors. In his latter years, he consciously moved his painting away from the figure scenes that had brought him so much popularity and instead pushed his painting in new directions, applying paint with his hands onto unstretched canvases to give his work raw energy and immense emotional power. This film is an account of his life and a profile of an extraordinary painter.
John Martin Gallery was his principal agent from 1992 until his death in 2008, putting on more than a dozen exhibitions with Yates. The work he produced in the last five years of his life will be the subject of a new book and exhibition in 2015.
