A video showing a blind Filipina effortlessly belting out Mariah Carey's version of "I'll Be There" inside a mall is making rounds online, as the hype surrounding the pop star's concert reached its peak last night.
The more than four-minute video shows the woman apparently singing
the 1993 hit on karaoke with mall-goers looking and cheering her on.
The description for the clip, uploaded by YouTube user Jeff Alagar
back in June, read: "We had to look twice as the video started because
it was so good I thought she was lip syncing. But this is all genuine
vocals coming from this little gem."
The singer is tagged as Katchry Jewel Golbin, who also goes by the
name of Alienette Coldfire on social media site Facebook. She has over
2,500 followers, as of writing.
Carey recently concluded the Manila leg of her "Elusive Chanteuse"
tour on Tuesday night. She said on her official Twitter account, moments
after the show: "Mahal kita Manila!!!"
The American pop diva is set to head over to Thailand for an October
30 show, before wrapping up the worldwide tour in Australia and New
Zealand.
Referred to as the "songbird supreme" by the Guinness World Records,
Carey is famed for her five-octave vocal range, power, and signature use
of the whistle register.
She has sold more than 200 million records worldwide, and has
received more than 50 awards throughout her career, most notably her
five Grammy wins.
A vocal school based in Indonesia even use Carey as a basis for "range."
In a viral video uploaded back in 2012, Kursus Vokal KBL showcased
one of their students --a girl named Serena Onasis-- belting out the
diva's version of the well-known Christmas song, "O Holy Night."
In the more than five-minute clip, Serena twice reached "higher
notes" than Carey. The school credited the impressive feat to a
technique called "muscle coordination."
